Itaewon Plumbing, Explained in English

Much of Itaewon was built decades before its current tenants arrived. Behind the renovated interiors, many villas still run on their original drain stacks — narrower than modern code, with joints that have shifted as the hillside settled. Three patterns show up again and again:

• Bathroom drains that gurgle, then back up. On a slope, the wastewater from upstairs units passes through the pipes of the units below. When the shared stack narrows with scale and grease, the lowest bathroom pays the price first.
• Rooftop (oktap) units with their own rules. Rooftop additions were often plumbed after the fact, with long horizontal runs across the roof. They clog at the bends and, in January, they are the first pipes in the building to ice up.
• Alleys a truck cannot enter. Plenty of Itaewon addresses sit up a staircase. We plan for that: our drain machines and camera gear break down into carryable units, so a fourth-floor walk-up on a footpath is a normal job for us, not a reason to turn back.

Most Itaewon clients rent through a realtor and worry about two things: getting overcharged because they can't negotiate in Korean, and touching a repair their landlord should be paying for. We deal with both directly — the price is fixed and agreed before we start, and when the fault sits in the building's shared plumbing rather than your unit, we say so and give you photo evidence you can pass to your realtor or landlord.
