Washing machine won't drain in winter? The veranda drain or hose has frozen

In most Korean apartments and villas the washing machine lives on the veranda — the unheated strip of the home between the living room and the outside wall. In a cold wave it is the first place drains freeze. The machine stops mid-cycle with a drain error, or the floor around it fills with grey water, and the question is which of three things froze.

First, stop the machine and unplug it

Do not restart the cycle to "try again." A drain pump running against ice can overheat, and each restart sends more water to a place it cannot leave. Switch the machine off, pull the plug from a dry spot with dry hands, and keep everyone off the wet floor near the socket.

Which part froze? Three possibilities

  1. The drain hose. The grey hose from the back of the machine to the floor drain often sags in a loop where a little water sits between washes. That water freezes first. Sign: the floor drain itself is empty and dry, and the hose feels stiff.
  2. The veranda floor drain and its trap. Water from the hose reaches the drain and then stops. Sign: a puddle around the grate, sometimes a skin of ice in it.
  3. The building's shared drain pipe. In many buildings the veranda drains of every floor join one vertical pipe on the outside wall. If that freezes, nobody's laundry water can get down it. Sign: water rises in your drain even while your machine is off — when a neighbour above is doing laundry. This one is not yours to fix.

Thawing the hose or your own drain

  1. Close the veranda windows and open the door from the living room so indoor heat reaches the veranda.
  2. Take the drain hose out of the floor drain, lower it into a bucket, and let any trapped water run out.
  3. Lay the hose in a basin of warm water, or wrap it in towels soaked in warm water, until it bends easily.
  4. For the floor drain, lift the grate and pour warm tap water in slowly, a cup at a time. A hair dryer pointed at the grate from a distance also works — keep it and its cable well clear of the water.
  5. When the water goes down freely, refit the hose so it runs downhill with no loop, and run a short rinse cycle while you watch the drain.

When it is the shared pipe

Stop using any water that drains to the veranda — washing machine, veranda tap, the utility sink if there is one — and tell the management office (관리사무소). In a villa without one, tell the landlord, who will need to arrange the work for the whole building. Thawing a shared pipe means reaching it from the outside wall or from the lowest floor, and neighbours above have to be asked to hold off while it is done. Photograph the water level in your drain with a time stamp; if it overflows into your home, that record matters.

A message for the management office:

(○동 ○호)입니다. 베란다 배수구로 물이 역류합니다.
저희 세탁기는 끄고 있는데도 물이 올라옵니다. 공용 배수관이 언 것 같습니다. 확인 부탁드립니다.

Things not to do

  • No boiling water, torch or heat gun on the drain or hose.
  • No drain-cleaning chemicals on ice — they do not melt it, and they sit in the trap waiting for whoever opens it next.
  • No electric heater standing on a wet veranda floor.
  • Do not keep doing laundry "because it drained a bit" — a half-frozen drain overflows on the next load.

Keeping it from happening again

  • On cold-wave days, do laundry in the warmer part of the day, not late at night.
  • After each wash, lift the drain hose so it empties, and keep it short and downhill.
  • Keep the veranda window shut through the cold spell, and cover the floor drain grate with a mat when the machine is not running.
  • Close the washing machine tap after use in a cold wave; the inlet side can freeze too.

The wider winter routine is in frozen pipes in Korea, and if you are not sure whether this is the building's problem or yours, who to call first in winter sorts it in two checks.

Questions from a flooded veranda

Can I pour boiling water down the veranda drain?

No. Korean veranda drains and the pipes behind them are mostly plastic, and the trap under the grate can crack or deform with boiling water. Warm tap water, poured slowly in small amounts, is enough — and if it simply sits there, the ice is deeper than you can reach from the grate.

My building posted a notice asking people not to do laundry. Why?

Many Korean apartment buildings post one during cold waves. When the shared drain pipe on the outside wall freezes, laundry water from the floors above has nowhere to go and comes up through the lowest veranda drains. Holding off until the notice is lifted protects your downstairs neighbours — and, if you live low down, yourself.

The machine will not fill with water at all. Is that the same problem?

No — that is the supply side. The tap on the wall or the inlet hose has frozen, not the drain. Close the tap, take the inlet hose off, warm it in a basin of warm water, and warm the tap with a towel soaked in warm water. Do not run the machine until water flows freely from the tap.

Still standing water? Send us the drain

Text a photo of the floor drain with the grate off and one of the hose, plus your building type and floor. We tell you whether it looks like your drain or the shared pipe, and if it is a visit, the price is confirmed on site before work starts. English by text (SMS) works best. Phone calls are fine in Korean or Japanese.
